Carhartt Workwear was established in 1889 by Hamilton Carhartt after discovering a need for US railroad workers to have a hard wearing workwear coverall.
Hamilton began his operation with only four sewing machines and five members of staff, today Carhartt Workwear is a multi-national company selling millions of workwear clothing products the world over.
Carhartt Workwear is synonymous with quality and hard wearing products which will stand the test of time. This philosophy and attention to detail has led Carhartt to become market leaders not only in the USA but in Europe as well.
Carhartt Workwear's first mass produced workwear garment was the Brown Duck Coverall used by rail workers all over the US.
Carhartt developed the coverall but rather than waiting for the customers to come to him to purchase his superior products, Carhartt ventured out and sold his products from the road. Carhartt spend many years building and developing great relations with his customer base and grew his reputation as the supreme pioneer of workwear clothing essentially before there was even a market for workwear.
Carhartt’s extraordinary work ethic and keen eye was etched throughout his entire organisation which led to a rapid growth of the business and further expansion and extension of product ranges to fit with the wide ranging diverse work related fields.
Today Carhartt Workwear has over 122 years of pioneering new workwear products that have become trusted and preferred workwear for many generations of workers. Carhartt wish to bring this success to the UK, and instil the values and quality in the UK workwear user that the their US counterparts have enjoyed for many years.
Carhartt Workwear UK have since increased their ranges to include, workwear jackets, trousers, bodywarmers, hoodies, sweatshirts, T-shirts, polo’s and accessories.
Carhartt Workwear was one of the first companies to use Brown Duck material in their product, Brown duck is a canvas material similar to that of ship sails, the duck material is incredibly hard wearing as you would expect and ideal for workwear products that needed to last longer than cotton equivalents. Carhartt still use Brown Duck fabric in their products to this day along with cutting edge materials to create unique blends that stand up to the toughest tests in the workwear field.
Many products now use cotton hybrid weaves that have the Carhartt look but perform to even higher levels. The Heritage range for example stands out for special mention as the workwear clothing products encompass everything that the brand stands for as well as holding a certain aesthetic of traditional workwear clothing products. The UK Market is different to the US one however the quality of the Workwear clothing will transpose very well to the UK where the wearers will appreciate the high performance that Carhartt Workwear clothing offers.
Carhartt Workwear’s brand ethos is simple and stems from the very beginning, Hamilton Carhartt wanted all his workwear clothing products to stand the test of time. BHI Workwear believe Hamilton would be extremely proud of all the Carhartt Workwear ranges available today simply because they have never lost the qualities that made Carhartt Workwear such a dynamic and successful brand in the first place.
One area of key note to discuss is the crossover of the brand and products from workwear clothing to streetwear clothing. There are only a few brands that manage this with aplomb and Carhartt Workwear is certainly one of the few.
During the 80’s more and more people particularly in Europe began to wear the parka jackets by Carhartt for uses outside the typical workwear clothing field. Graffiti artists used the jackets because of their warmth, durability and styling. Carhartt workwear clothing became cult favourites and in 1994 WIP (Work in Progress) started to produce and sell under license Carhartt clothing products specifically for streetwear. The workwear clothing brand had achieved massive and lucrative crossover success.
This success has led to some great innovations in materials as well as styles and made the European transition a successful and smooth operation.
Many consumers see Carhartt Workwear as much for their fashion presence as much if not more than their core business of workwear clothing.
That cross market proliferation is the Holy Grail as far as many brands are concerned and Carhartt Workwear can boast commercial and critical success in all areas.
Here at BHI Workwear we say, long may it continue. The UK workwear clothing market is massive as well as diverse with many options open to consumers. The fact Carhartt Workwear has a distinct look and very successful heritage will be a massive plus in the way the brand is viewed and accepted by the UK market.
